Our Bob Hughes is featured in U.S. News & World Report today in a question-and-answer story by Andrew Soergel entitled, “Ask An Economist: How Close is the Next Recession?” In the story, Hughes expands on our cautionary report last month that important aspects of the economy appeared to be weakening.

From Soergel’s story, Hughes says: “We’ve seen the weakness spreading across the economy. And yet the labor market has remained very strong, and part of that is because, when you look at where the weakness is coming from, it’s the exports and the manufacturing sector and the energy and mining sector. And the composition [of the labor market] is just distinctly different from where we’re seeing the weakness.

“We do see a few unusual items here. Our themes at AIER that we’ve been saying are kind of the core remaining factors that are still relatively strong in the U.S. are consumer spending, investment and housing. Those are the three domestic core pieces, while weakness from abroad and exports have been a drag. But this is a big concern for us, when we see the consumer spending part and the investment part get weaker.”
