Our Patrick Coate discussed the factors that are causing Americans to increasingly stay put during an interview with Wharton Business Radio on Wednesday.

Being interviewed by host Dan Loney, Coate noted his recent research report that showed a big drop in moving in the United States over the last 30 years. He noted the changes are happening across the board – married people, single people, younger, older, those with and without health insurance, and people living in different geographic locations.

There is nothing making moving harder than it was before, Coate said. “These moves are sometimes thought of as a very good thing, moving you from a labor market that isn’t so good to one with better opportunities. But at the same time, it can be a very big disruption,” Coate said.

Coate discussed his theory that people are increasingly able to find jobs in their existing labor market, with the rise of technology, and the increasing similarity of cities.
