Internship Program

Founded in 1933, American Institute for Economic Research is a qualified public charity with 501(c)(3) status under the IRS Code. Its mission is to be a widely recognized authoritative independent source of economic information, stemming from its proprietary research and publications. The Institute, along with its wholly-owned investment advisory, is located on a beautiful 100-plus acre campus in the southern Berkshires of Western Massachusetts.

"My interest lies in macroeconomic research and financial analysis and my project was aligned towards my interests which motivated me to work hard.  My project focused on the business cycle dating procedures, AIER’s and other organizations’ statistical indicators and the process of asset bubble development and collapse.  I tried to connect the dots and come up with a relevant report for AIER.  The entire process of learning has been very enriching.

"Apart from our assigned projects, the research meetings and seminars that we were allowed to be a part of helped me in understanding the institute and its work areas better.  The idea of taking the interns on outings is really appreciable.  Overall, it has been a great internship experience for me.  I am glad that AIER allows its interns to work on projects that are worthy and meaningful to both, the interns and the institute."
—Pratistha Gyawali, 2013 AIER summer intern

"I have been very grateful to have such a wonderful experience learning so much here at AIER. As a PhD student I have mainly focused on complex macroeconomic tools such as econometrics and dynamic models paying very little attention to the empirical aspect of research. Being interested in monetary policy, I have been amazed by the extent of empirical knowledge that I have accrued since the beginning of the internship. Also with the assistance of Dr. Liu, I have been able to learn more advance econometric tools such as the basics of state space models and the Kalman filter estimation."
—Akwasi Nti-Addae, 2013 AIER summer intern

"Throughout the past two months at AIER I learned first-hand what it is like to work in the field that I studied in College. I spent a lot of time studying at UMD and I always wondered if what I was learning in Econometrics was ever actually going to be useful to me. My first day interning here I was reassured of my choice to study economics. It was fun and interesting to hear colleagues talking about STATA and running regressions. I felt comfortable in this environment and enjoyed listening to the researchers talk about their findings."
—Melissa Dick, 2013 AIER summer intern

"I have learned a variety of skills while working on the occupational mobility project. One of those skills that I predict will be most useful is how to use STATA. I had had no experience with STATA before coming here and I can tell that it will be very important in future research I do. I also gained familiarity with the CPS data, which may prove to be useful if I end up researching a large variety of subjects. Outside of the project that I was working on, AIER provided me with a brief opportunity to experience office culture and see how economists collaborate on their research. This was especially true during the meetings that interns were allowed to attend. This was also my first time spending a decent period of time in the Northeast, and even though we are not located in a major city, I was able to form an idea of what the region is like."
—Ethan Krohn, 2013 AIER summer intern
