But now, NAU can raise those foam fingers proudly. Flagstaff, the home of Arizona’s lesser-known but now officially cooler university, was named the third best college town in the nation. And that ranking doesn’t come from one of the thousands of websites that routinely rank everything from best retirement enclaves to juiciest burgers.

Instead, Flagstaff was named No. 3 by the American Institute of Economic Research, a group whose mere name suggests statistical-based, if not irrefutable, findings. Flagstaff finished behind top college town Boulder, Colo. (University of Colorado) and Champaign-Urbana, Ill. (University of Illinois).
