Go Gaters! This energetic city revolves around the University of Florida, the country’s second-largest university. As with most college towns, Gainesville’s population is well educated. In our index it is tied for fourth with Trenton, N.J., for the most educated population. Aside from football games, the city’s entertainment includes a vibrant music scene and outdoor attractions to accompany the ideal weather. As you would expect for a college town, there’s never a shortage of cheap eats and fun bars. The city’s upbeat attitude masks its economic conditions, however. Unemployment rates are the highest and average earnings are the lowest of all the Small Metros.
