Houston

< BACK to CDI TOOL
Houston’s economic attraction for young college students is its Southern location, which tends to push down costs. Rents, for example, are among the lowest of our major metros, while the overall economic climate ranks fourth highest. Furthermore, a second- lowest youth unemployment rate and a high labor-force participation rate auger well for work opportunities after graduation. We caution, however, that Houston is home to the oil and gas industry, and our data may not fully reflect that industry’s recent downturn. For students seeking racial and ethnic diversity, Houston will appeal, with the second most diverse population among our major metros. Despite these ideal economic conditions, quality of life ranks second to last.
