Buffalo, N.Y.

Our midsize metros list finishes off with Buffalo. With the second-lowest diversity rates and a college-educated population below the midsize average, Buffalo has one of the lowest demographic rankings among midsize metros. However, Buffalo redeems itself with a quality of life that ranks in the middle of the pack. In fact, bars and restaurants and city access are above average. Students may not feel the desire to leave their dorm rooms as much during the brutal winters brought on by lake-effect snow from Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. At least rents for the apartments they may be spending long winters in are among the lowest.
