For Summer Beach Reading, China’s Economy
It’s hard to understand the global economy without understanding China. Here’s an interesting story in Fortune listing 10 must-read books about the world’s second-largest economy. They include “Country Driving,” Peter Hessler’s on-the-ground look at the country’s industrialization, and its consequences for its people and the environment; Leslie Chang’s “Factory Girls,” a portrait of what it’s like to be a female migrant worker in that country, working grueling hours; and Richard McGregor’s “The Party,” a look at the huge impact of the Communist Party on life and business in China. Scott Cendrowski, the author for Fortune, writes: “Casual readers about China are lucky in one sense: The complexity of the place has attracted some of the world’s best storytellers. They are drawn here for all kinds of reasons, but China’s 5,000-year history, unique culture, and crazy characters provide material most writers could only dream of.” It’s great reading, check it out.
