Today we shine a spotlight on San José, California, which took the top spot in the midsize category of our Employment Destinations Index, which we released earlier this month. The index ranked American cities by the attributes that are most attractive to young college graduates.  The nine-factor formula centers on demographics, economics and quality of life.

San José, population 1,893,312, features the highest ranking for earnings in the country. But it also has high rents. Young people in the “capital of Silicon Valley” will find a highly educated and diverse population, and a slightly more affordable alternative to the San Francisco area. That’s a tradeoff, however, because San Francisco features a more active entertainment scene, among other things.
