As Obama Visits Cleveland, AIER’s Hughes Talks Economy

On the occasion of President Obama’s visit to Cleveland, AIER Senior Research Fellow Bob Hughes appeared on National Public Radio’s Cleveland affiliate on Wednesday to speak about the economy on the program, “The Sound of Ideas.”

Hughes talked about some of the data that had recently come out, including Americans’ higher net worth. Manufacturing, he said, was down from its heyday, but in this country that sector is benefitting from a more competitive cost structure, including higher productivity and lower energy prices. “On a global basis, we’re fairly competitive now, compared to a decade or so ago, and that’s showing through in our manufacturing sector. It’s seeing a little bit of a renaissance,” Hughes said.

The broadcast also included Dan Moulthrop, CEO of the City Club of Cleveland; Scott Horsley, NPR White House correspondent; and Thomas Sutton, professor of political science at Baldwin-Wallace University.
