Cost of Living

Homeowner or Tenant?

We have designed the following worksheets to help you organize financial information in a way that you may find helpful in deciding whether to rent or buy, or perhaps whether to sell and buy another house. These worksheets have been designed to be as flexible as possible, i.e., to be useful for nearly every alternative available to you. As a result, some readers may find the worksheets and the instructions overly complex. That, unfortunately, is a reflection of the housing transaction. Readers who believe that buying or renting a house is a simple matter presumably won’t be interested in this book. Moreover, even if you do not gain the full advantage of this book by completing the worksheets, you may find it useful simply for its descriptions of the many aspects pertinent to the housing decision. At least some explicit thought, even if not qualified by formal estimates, should be given to the financial aspects of the housing decision. For more information, please consult our title, Homeowner or Tenant?, available at the AIER bookstore.
