Visiting Research Fellowship PDF Print E-mail

We invite professors and other qualified individuals to submit applications to spend all or part of the summer as Visiting Research Fellows at the American Institute for Economic Research in the scenic Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts. Applications are welcome from professionals in the economics field or in related disciplines.

The field of research is open, however we especially welcome applicants who are interested in money, banking and credit; public and personal finance; economic and monetary history; the role of government in society; the methodology of economics; and the role of individual freedom, private property, and free enterprise in economic progress.

Candidates must have strong writing and presentation skills. Fellows are expected to present their research findings to AIER's research staff, other Visiting Research Fellows, and Student Fellows. Fellows are also expected to communicate their research findings to a general readership in either our twice-monthly Research Reports or monthly Economic Education Bulletin.

Ideally, Fellows are in residence during one or both of the four-week student program sessions, although other arrangements are possible. While in Great Barrington, Visiting Fellows receive a cash stipend, office space in our library, and housing at the Institute's 100-acre campus. AIER offers a range of housing accommodations from two-bedroom apartments, to single and double rooms located in the English manor style main house, a stone mansion representative of the storied "summer cottages" of Berkshire County. On weekends, Fellows can avail themselves of a number of amusements. Numerous hiking trails and jogging paths lace through the property; swimming, tennis, and golf also are nearby.

In addition, the Berkshires are favored with several exceptional cultural attractions including Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Music, drama, and dance are offered by Shakespeare & Co. in Lenox, the Berkshire Theatre Festival in Stockbridge, and Jacob's Pillow in Becket, just to name a few. The area has all essential services, many excellent restaurants, and numerous specialty shops. Event calendars, recreation opportunities, family activities and much more information about the Berkshires can be found at http://www.berkshires.org/.

Applicants should send a cover letter, a 500-word outline of their proposed course of research, vita, and a copy of a recent publication, unpublished manuscript or article written for a non-technical audience. Candidates should also provide the names of two academic references. The application deadline is March 15.

Founded in 1933, AIER is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to scientific inquiry into economic problems and to the education of the general public through wide dissemination of its research results. Since its founding, AIER has focused on the economic benefits of free markets, disciplined fiscal and monetary policies, limited government, and currencies freely convertible to gold.
