The College Destionations Index (2009-10 Edition) is still creating a stir nationally amongst news outlets and universities. As the Deseret News writes:

Just as real estate value can often be calculated according to where the property is located, so too can higher education, according to the American Institute for Economic Research.

AIER's recent book Start Here: Getting Your Financial Life on Track has been recommended by Robbie Dingeman, a personal finance columnist for the Honolulu Advertiser.

The book "shows how even a modest $66 a month in savings that begins at age 25 ($31,680) can generate a nest egg of $100,000, assuming an average annual return of 5 percent, while if you start at age 40 it will take $168 a month and $50,400 to generate that same amount."

The Detriot News has published a commentary by Lyndee Kemmet, visiting research fellow. Entitled Detriot Should Avoid Bankruptcy, this article was publised on Wednesday, September 9. Here is a quote from the article:

Stung by the recession, a growing number of local governments are eyeing bankruptcy -- including the Detroit Public Schools and possibly the city of Detroit. Bankruptcy might hold creditors at bay and give a city or other public institution time to reorganize itself, but experience has shown the stigma of bankruptcy takes its toll and should be avoided.

Municipal bankruptcy rose out of the Great Depression when the sinking economy took with it many state and local governments. Unable to pay their debts, local governments lobbied for federal legislation allowing them to file for bankruptcy.

Since its release on Tuesday, September 7, AIER's College Destinations Index (CDI) has been highlighted by numerous TV, radio and print outlets. Recent additions to this include: Hartford Courant, Richmond Times-Dispatch, Lake Tribune, WTOP (Washington, DC), Ames Convention and Visitors Bureau (Iowa), CBS 6 WRGB (Albany affiliate), Say Campus Life blog, Onward State blog (Penn State), Iowa City Press Citizen, and Ithaca Journal:

Lynch said Ithaca did especially well in their measurements of academic environment. Ithaca has 310 college students for every 1000 residents, 11.5 percent of the student body is from overseas, and 64.4 percent of the population between 25 and 34 having completed a degree. Student concentration, degree attainment, and research spending were the highest among the top 20 college towns, as determined by AIER.

USA Today Reports on College Destinations Index PDF Print E-mail

USA Today published a piece today on AIER's 2009-10 College Destinations Index (CDI):

High school students beginning the college search have yet another resource at hand as they narrow their choices: a college destinations index that aims to quantify the whole off-campus experience.

And the index finds that New York City, San Jose, Boulder, Colo., and Ithaca, N.Y., are some of the top destinations for college students.

"Your college years are shaped by the classes, the professors and the campus, but they're also shaped by the location of the school," says Kerry Lynch, senior economist for the American Institute for Economic Research, an independent research organization in Great Barrington, Mass.
