Summer Fellowship Appeal - Please consider supporting AIER’s 2008 Summer Fellowship Program. Since 1946, the Fellowship Program has provided unique training and financial support to distinguished students pursuing graduate degrees in economics and related fields. Students take courses on property rights, scientific procedures of inquiry and sound money, all fundamental subjects that are typically ignored in mainstream education. Last summer’s program was another great success. We hosted 15 students and nine visiting scholars. In addition to the five rigorous core courses, visiting scholars and ten guest speakers provided more than 20 presentations during the two four-week sessions. Solutions to the Nation’s economic problems probably will not come from mainstream academia. Unfortunately, most educators endorse government intervention as a panacea for economic difficulties. We provide intensive training in free-market economics that students cannot get in most “megaversity” graduate programs. Our value derives from our independence. We do not accept sponsorships from private foundations, commercial interests, or the government. We depend solely on continued support from individual donors like you, who understand the importance of the independent economic perspective we offer. Please consider for a moment how different AIER’s use of your fellowship contribution dollar is. Some charities spend as little as 10 cents of each dollar on their good works. In contrast, every dollar that you contribute to AIER’s Fellowship program goes directly to the students and scholars. As we mark our 75th Anniversary, AIER remains committed to introducing sound economic thinking to the next generation of leaders. |

Research Reports Mailed - The second March 2008 issue of Research Reports features a lead article about the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT), which is requiring an increasing number of taxpayers to compute their individual income taxes under two sets of rules and pay the higher of the two indicated imposts. Is the growing wave of commentary on the AMT capturing all the salient points? The second article in this issue examines the puzzle of China's economic miracle, and the ways in which property rights are distributed in the People's Republic.Research Reports is mailed 22 times per year to our Annual Sustaining Members. This week's issue will hit the mail on Friday, March 13, and will sent via periodical rate. If you are a current ASM and would like to receive your mailing sooner, you can renew your subscription and select the "First Class Mail" option for $13 more per year. |

Research Reports Mailing - The first March 2008 issue of Research Reports will be mailed out today to our Annual Sustaining Members. This issue features the monthly report on Business Cycle Conditions, as well as an article by Senior Economist Michael J. Rizzo titled "Should You Buy Local?" Dr. Rizzo observes that many of us are regularly admonished to buy locally produced products, especially food. If we adhere to such admonishments on any meaningful scale, will we enhance or diminish worldwide economic welfare? |
