Choosing the right college goes beyond course availability and academic faculty. For many young people location matters too. Culture, population, transportation, restaurants and other amenities provide the backdrop for an invaluable informal education. The College Destinations Index helps compare the broader learning environments of the top 75 cities and college towns. It breaks down these college deciding factors for students and lays them out in an easy-to-understand map and table.

Forgive me, AIER, for opining about what campus I would favor if I were again 18, instead of 77. The campus would be that of the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, ON, Canada. Started in the 1950s by local businesmen, the mission was an education based on sound values. Somehow, the trend turned toward high tech, due mostly to some very sharp professors. Soon, students at UW created start-up firms locally that became stars--and some of those students had not even graduated! One such student created a little item you may know: the BlackBerry! Microsoft has had a recruiting office in W'loo for years! Now it is boosting the whole area. UW has been ranked No. 1 univ in Canada. 'Nuff said?
