The Director of Research and Education (DRE) is responsible for the research and educational activities of the Institute. The DRE recruits and leads a team of researchers with the goal of providing the average person with information, analysis, and guidance that will help with common but sometimes complex economic issues and provide commentary on the likely future consequences of current developments and policies. The DRE also directs the design and implementation of related educational programs. The Director of Research and Education is responsible to the President.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the regular publication, as scheduled, of research reports and economic education bulletins; ensure publications meet AIER standards for content and style of writing and reflect scientific and unbiased economic research; and determine that publications are of interest to and suitable for AIER readership.
  • Oversee planning and organization of educational activities such as student programs, conferences, and public events.
    Recruit scholars and oversee the work of the research staff.
  • Serve as Chair of the Faculty.
  • Market research and education programs through a variety of media.
  • Supervise the 15,000 volume library.
  • Report to the Board on research and education activities.
  • Carry out the duties of the president during his absence.

Qualifications:
The Director of Research and Education will hold a Masters Degree or Ph.D. in Economics or related field with 15 years of progressively more responsible positions in economic research. Equivalent combination of education, experience and training will be considered.

Other Requirements:

  • Demonstrated leadership and management abilities.
  • Experienced economics researcher knowledgeable about topics such as fiscal and monetary policy, money and inflation, Social Security reform, health care, property rights, and international economics.
  • Proficient in the analysis and interpretation of scientific and technical research.
  • Advanced writing, editing, public speaking and communication skills
  • Willingness to assist with fundraising efforts related to research and education.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Commitment to the mission of the Institute
